New Tips on Spray Varnishing -2009

Research into a new HVLP gun lead me to the automotive finishing suppliers who recommended some great new equipment that I have now been using for over a year and find very helpful and much improved over the old methods of spray varnishing.

The best new gun I found was an Anest Iwata model - HVLP compliant - and very well made with a great spray pattern and easy to use adjustable controls. I bought the LPH300-LV a compact size as it was slightly smaller than full size and felt comfortable in my hand. The LPH400-LV is the full size model and both come with exactly the same features and nozzles. I ordered the 1.3mm fluid nozzle and it is working beautifully.

To find a distributor in my area I called the company and they gave me a list of nearby shops that could order the gun for me and I received it promptly, within a week. The auto finishers told me it was the best gun out there and they showed me a new cup handling system that uses plastic containers that bayonet mount to the gun and can be stored lidded, with your varnishes in them, and ready to go.

The new system eliminates the metal fluid holding cup attached to the gun and replaces it with a bayonet mount (see above) designed to accept the new DeKup containers. I have been using this system for a year now and it is a great way to eliminate a lot of waste and hazardous clean up. My varnishes are now kept ready to go in the DeKup containers that attach to the gun and detach with no mess or clean up. I simply keep one container full of gun cleaner solvent and shoot it through the gun after each use. I can now varnish a painting and clean the gun in no time at all with much less solvent use and no waste.

New compressors are available also. I have been using the Makita 2400. It is large enough to not turn on all the time, fairly quiet, is very well made and reasonable in price. It is also strong enough to run pneumatic power tools and be portable to a job site.

Many thanks to the gentlemen and women of Central Body Shop Supplies in Auburn, New York for their expert help and advise. This system works great.
